Topic

“Organizational Savvy:
                               How to Make an Impact”

This intriguing seminar is based on research that originated at Yale in the 70’s and tracked successful individuals in large organizations for two decades.  Studies show that there are clear characteristics which distinguish professionals who achieve positive impact on a large scale from their less influential counterparts.  The program examines the following techniques as critical for consistent success:

•Presenting new ideas or different points of view.
•Developing a base of support.
•Reducing risk in large organizations.

You will gain an expert’s perspective on how organizations really work.  Learn how high impact corporate professionals work behind the scenes to gain acceptance of their ideas by colleagues and influence leaders within their organization.

Program:Transforming the Leadership Development function into a Profit Center: Building Leadership Capability and Results

It is widely agreed that adult learning is most effective when instruction is integrated with practice. However, most leadership development programs face practical challenges in making the link between instruction and on-the-job application.

In this session, Patrice Murphy will talk about results-fueled approaches to management development. She will describe Siemens' global leadership development program which, over a decade, required 14,000 participants to hone their leadership skills in the crucible of "business improvement projects" designed to achieve some tough business goals. When the first 30-40 projects delivered about $11M in savings, Business Week cited Siemens' management development program as one of the few that "not only pays for itself, but saves money". One of the program's architects asked point blank: "Why should management development be a cost center? Why shouldn't it be a profit center?" More than 10 years and 3,000 business improvement projects later, the program had certainly earned that title.

In this time of cost pressure, a development program that can deliver tangible benefits to the organization will be a winner. Even more importantly, such programs can provide leaders with the opportunity to experience a challenging project assignment that goes well beyond their day-to-day experience, but that addresses today the real needs of their organization.

After outlining the approach exemplified in the Siemens program, Patrice will lead a discussion of ways to integrate challenge, action, struggle and real achievement into leadership development. She will help participants consider and compare program elements that could be combined in this way and will provide practical advice on how to shift from a 'cost center' to a 'profit center' mindset in L&D.

Speaker:
Patrice Murphy, Senior Consultant, Robert H. Schaffer & Associates, Stamford CT
Patrice Murphy is a senior consultant with Robert H. Schaffer & Associates (RHS&A), a global consulting firm that helps organizations set and achieve stretch goals in brutally short time frames.

Her firm’s clients include GE, 3M, Cisco, Citigroup, ConAgra, Johnson & Johnson, Schering-Plough, the World Bank and Zurich Financial Services. RHS&A partnered with Siemens to design and help run a global leadership program in which global management teams used their developing skills to tackle significant performance improvement projects. delivered so much value it was dubbed a profit center.

Patrice was born in the red-dust country of outback Australia. To further her education she moved south and attended the University of Melbourne where she graduated with Honors in Political Science. She went on to earn Masters Degrees in Business and Labor Law, both with distinction.

It was while finishing her graduate studies that Patrice began to work full time as a management consultant. Her specialty: helping managers and front line employees reach consensus and increase productivity in beleaguered situations.

In 1995 Patrice came to America to study and work. At New York University, she completed a PhD in Management and Organizational Behavior. Her dissertation studied how local units in a global business adjusted their goals in response to performance feedback.

In 1999, she joined RHS&A as a consultant and later partner. Patrice says: “I was attracted by the firm’s unique approach, which breaks every challenge down into bite-size chunks. RHS&A does this better than any other firm I’ve seen. It’s simple, it’s bold, and it works.”

Patrice's practice focuses on helping clients execute strategy using rapid-cycle projects. She is an expert in WorkOut and was a contributing author of The GE WorkOut [McGraw-Hill, 2002]. She has also authored chapters in The Change Handbook [Berrett-Koehler 2007] and other articles on performance improvement.

Patrice lives with her husband and two children in Darien, CT. She can be reached at pmurphy@rhsa.com.
